The Lions Club has submitted an application for a 5K run that will cross the Gallants Channel bridge. The proposed date is Nov. 2, 2019. They have been advised that NCDOT will need to approve the event. The Beaufort Police & Fire Dept.'s have been advised of the event.
The event will require several road closures along the proposed route to include Turner Street and one lane of the bridge. The race organizers have submitted a proposed route and recommendations. At this time, they are asking if this is something the Town would consider contingent upon approval by NCDOT.
The BPD has several concerns that will need to be addressed to include the following:
1. Turner Street from the US 70 southbound (coming into town) needs to be shut down. Turner Street northbound (leaving town) can remain open.
2. The bridge and US 70 from Turner street heading west needs to be reduced to one lane for vehicular traffic heading east. This will allow the safety lane and one travel lane for runners going in each direction. This is going to mean someone is going to have to obtain a large number of traffic cones to mark these lanes.
3. A portable sign will need to be placed on the causeway alerting traffic to the race and to merge into the left hand lane to travel east over the bridge and on 70 until traffic passes Turner street.
** Staff has spoken to the Farmers Market Manager and there is not a perceived issue at this time.
